Guided By Fact

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.  Romans 12:2

Many times in the past we were guided by what we felt.  If it felt good, we did it.  If it didn’t feel good, we didn’t do it.  The world tells us we have to trust our feelings.  Our feelings, we are told, are what help to guide us through life.  But if we are going by our feelings, we can be fooled.  Many times of feelings will tell us to not rock the boat, to go along with whatever everyone else is doing.  We used our feelings as our guide through life and then wondered why our lives were so unmanageable.

At one time, we would have been paralyzed by fear.  We would have avoided difficult conversations.  Our addictions and compulsions grew and became monsters.  In the end we were enslaved by the pattern of this world.

In Christ centered recovery we learn to rely on the fact that God is in control and when we attempt to take control we make a mess of things.  Instead of going through life being a slave of our feelings, we learn to trust in God.  We learn to stop listening to our feelings and start living in faith.

Feelings are not fact.  They are just feelings.  God gave us our feelings to help us grow closer to Him.  Our feelings were never meant to lead us to a life of self destruction and misery.

By James Miller

Father, help me to be guided by fact and not by feeling.  I trust in you to provide me with all that I need.  You are what I crave and my life is yours.  I surrender all my feelings to you.
